Tellagunta Colony, a slum locality in Tirupati, has no electrical supply facility since many years.
Residents of the colony requested electricity department several times to provide power supply both to individual houses and street lights, but their requests remained on papers only. The Colony, which is very near to AP Southern Power Distribution Company Limited, remains in darkness.
Tirupati MLA Bhumana Karunakar Reddy made a number of requests to APSPDCL and protests for power connections but to no avail. When there was no response from the officials, Abhinay Reddy distributed solar lamps to the residents of the colony at his own cost on Sunday.
After observing the woes of Tellagunta Colony people for a long time, Bhumana Abhinay Reddy, son of Tirupati MLA Bhumana Karunakara Reddy, distributed 25 solar lamps to the residents of the colony free of cost.
Speaking to media persons, Abhinay Reddy said that he came forward to provide the lamps, one to each family at a cost of Rs 75,000 from his own pocket. As these people are suffering a lot in the absence of regular power supply, they were forced to live in darkness for years together, he pointed. Even though the colony is very near to the power supply office, it was facing the power problem.
